Our local chamber of commerce hosts a yearly event that is beneficial to locals and tourists alike. The first Friday and Saturday in August, you can find hundreds of yard sales in and around our small town. People looking for a good deal on anything from Callaway golf clubs to baby gear will drive from miles around to check out the loot.
Since we are downsizing and planning to move soon (hopefully!), we are participating in the event this year. For a small $15 fee, the Chamber puts together a map of all the participating residents so visitors won't miss any of the sales. Many people take advantage of the extra traffic in their neighborhoods and set up yard sales without being "official participants", but we wanted to make sure to get the maximum exposure since we have so much stuff to sell.
I think this is a great event for communities to pull together with a common goal - getting rid of clutter while gaining a bit of cash!
